Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a cross-platform Geographic Information System (GIS). It offers support for vector and raster formats, including spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS, common GIS vector formats such as Shapefiles, and geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF). Many plugins are available to dynamically add new functionality. Viewing of GRASS layers (vector and raster) is provided by a plugin. GRASS vector layers can be edited in QGIS.

Want to brush up on the names and locations of the 50 or so countries of modern Africa? This program from the Family Games Web Center will help you. African Geography Tutor presents a scrolling map of Africa along
with a list of countries. As your mouse pointer passes over the map, the country under the pointer highlights, along with its entry in the list. Simply browse the map until you feel ready, then try either of
the two self-test modes. In "Find Countries" mode, you are asked to click a country on the map given its name. In "Identify Countries" mode, you are asked to click the name in the list corresponding to the country that is highlighted on the map. Both quizzes run through the entire list of 49 countries in random order. A running score is displayed. Any errors are highlighted in the country list for later review.

AGIS for Windows is a mapping and simple GIS Shareware package for Windows. A large number of map and data layers are possible, new symbols can be added by the user, a number of projections are supported including polar, distances can be measured on-screen, cursor position is displayed in map coordinates, named data points can be searched for and located, everything is configurable and high resolution (publication quality) images can be cut from AGIS and pasted into popular packages such as MS Word. A reasonably detailed map of the world is included, as well as a number of example map and data views. Simplified access to higher resolution Digital Chart of the World map data is also provided.
